Description
Eudaxen 50mg is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient Diazoxide. It is primarily used to manage severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) caused by excessive insulin production (hyperinsulinism) from conditions like insulinomas, islet cell tumors, or congenital hyperinsulinism in infants, children, and adults. [1, 2]
How It Works
Diazoxide is a potassium channel activator. It opens potassium channels in pancreatic beta cells, causing hyperpolarization and inhibiting insulin release. This mechanism prevents blood sugar levels from dropping. Additionally, it acts as a vasodilator by relaxing the smooth muscles of peripheral blood vessels, leading to its occasional use in hypertensive emergencies. [1, 2]
Common Side Effects
- Fluid Retention: Swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet (edema).
- Hyperglycemia: Unwanted increases in blood sugar levels.
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.
- Other: Weakness, fatigue, or dizziness. [1]
Important Precautions
- Monitoring: Blood glucose and electrolyte levels must be closely monitored during treatment.
- Heart and Kidneys: Use with extreme caution in patients with heart failure, fluid overload, or impaired kidney function. [1]
