Description
Femara 2.5mg is an oral prescription medication containing the active ingredient letrozole. It belongs to a class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors. It is primarily used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women and is occasionally prescribed off-label for infertility and ovulation induction. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
How it Works
In postmenopausal women, estrogen is produced when other hormones are converted by an enzyme called aromatase. Femara works by blocking this enzyme, which significantly lowers the amount of estrogen circulating in the body. Because many breast cancers rely on estrogen to grow and spread, reducing the hormone starves the cancer cells. [1, 2]
Primary Indications
- Early Breast Cancer: Used after surgery or radiation to lower the risk of cancer returning in postmenopausal women.
- Extended Therapy: Used as continued treatment for women who have already completed five years of tamoxifen therapy.
- Advanced Breast Cancer: Used as a first-line treatment if cancer has spread locally or metastasized, or following a relapse.
