Peyona 20mg/ml is an authorized drug that consists of caffeine citrate, used solely to treat apnea of prematurity (breathing stops for more than 20 seconds) in premature babies. It functions as a CNS stimulant that helps initiate breathing.Key Facts & AdministrationActive ingredient: 20 mg of caffeine citrate per 1 ml of solution (or 10 mg caffeine base per 1 ml).Setting: The drug can be prescribed only within a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and under the direct supervision of a doctor who specializes in neonatology.Dosage: The drug is administered on a weight basis. A patient is given a loading dose of 20 mg/kg administered in an IV injection in 30 minutes and 24 hours later a maintenance dose of 5 mg/kg is administered every 24 hours (IV/PO).
